Danvers Half Long CARROT Seed (Heirloom)

VERY POPULAR CARROT - Heirloom: Danvers Half Long, a favorite main crop carrot with roots 6 to 7 inches long and 1-3/4 inches thick. Fine textured, tender bright orange flesh is rich in flavor and very sweet raw, cooked or frozen. This Danvers Half Long Heirloom carrot variety is a heavy yielder and good keeper for winter storage.
SOWING ... Plant carrot seed outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant in rows 12 to 15 inches apart, spacing seed 1/2 inch in the row. Cover seed with 1/4 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until carrot seeds start to grow.
THINNING ... When carrot plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 2 to 3 inches apart in me row.
GERMINATION ... Danvers Half Long Heirloom Carrot seed is very slow to germinate, requiring up to 3 to 4 weeks depending on soil and weather conditions. SEE GARDENING HINT BELOW.
REMARKS ... Some gardeners like to soak the carrot seed a few hours before planting to aid in germination. Make successive sowings of carrots up to mid-July for full sized roots for winter storage. HINT: Plant Radish seeds in the row with the carrots. The radishes will sprout quickly to mark the row, and will mature and can be harvested before the carrots get too large. |

EXTREMELY SWEET CARROT - MINIATURE: Little Finger Carrots are extremely sweet miniature carrots, good for eating whole, fresh or cooked. Cylindrical in shape with a blunt tip and very little core. Little Finger Carrots grow to approximately 3-1/2 to 4 inches long, 3/4 inch around.
SOWING ... Sow carrot seed outdoors as early in the spring as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 12 inches apart, spacing seed 1/2 inch apart in the row. Cover carrot seed with 1/4 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until carrot seeds begin to grow.

DEEP ORANGE ALL THE WAY THROUGH: Scarlet Nantes is one of the finest Carrots grown, of excellent quality, attractive shape and bright orange all the way through. Scarlet Nantes carrots has a delicious flavor either raw, cooked or frozen. Carrot roots grow 6 to 8 inches long, and are cylindrical and stump rooted.

SOWING ... For early cauliflower crop, start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost date. For later crop plant directly outdoors in late Spring or early Summer. Space cauliflower seeds 2 inches apart in rows spaced 2 to 2-1/2 feet apart. Cover cauliflower seeds with 1/8 inch of fine soil, well pressed down.

SOWING ... Plant celery seed indoors 8 to 10 weeks before danger of frost is past. Celery may also be started outdoors 2 to 3 weeks before frost free date. Plant celery seed 1/2 inch apart in rows 3 feet apart, covering celery seed with 1/8 inch fine soil, well pressed down.

Michihili CHINESE CABBAGE Seed

ORIENTAL VEGETABLES: Michihili Chinese Cabbage is tender, crisp and sweet, with a pleasant spicy flavor. Chinese Cabbage is used like lettuce in salads, cooked like spinach, shredded for slaw, steamed or stir-fried. Plants are 16 to 20 inches tall. Heads about 4 inches across at base. Thick green leaves blanch creamy white inside. Michihili Chinese Cabbage is a sure header, and keeps well.
SOWING ... Michihili Chinese Cabbage is usually planted in mid summer for a fall crop. Plant in rows 2 feet apart, spacing seed 1 inch apart in the row. Cover Chinese cabbage seed with 1/4 inch of soil well pressed down.
THINNING ... When Chinese cabbage plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin or transplant, spacing plants 18 inches apart.

HEIRLOOM VARIETY: A European delicacy, Chicory Witloof, Belgian Endive is now very popular in America and this Heirloom variety is well suited for home garden production. Sweet and delicious, they are a welcome addition to any garden. Grow all season to produce sturdy roots. After tops die back in fall or winter, dig entire tap root and replant in moist soil deep enough to just cover the top of the root. Belgian Endive is excellent raw or lightly cooked.
SOWING ... Sow Chicory Witloof seed in early spring after danger of frost is past. Plant seed thinly in rows 24 inches apart.
THINNING ... Thin Chicory Witloof to 12 inches apart when plants are 2 inches tall.
GERMINATION ... Chicory Witloof seed germinates in 6 to 10 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS ... Sturdy roots are essential to produce top quality chicons (Belgian Endive). Use deeply dug fertile soil. The leaves form a loose head similar to lettuce and should be left on throughout the season. When replanting roots for the winter, a black trash bag with holes punched in makes a good container. Tie off bag and store roots at 65 to 70 degrees F., periodically checking for soil moisture and growth. Harvest chicons when 4 to 8 inches long by cutting off just above the roots. Leave roots in place for possible second crop. |
