Hart's Heritage Love Lies Bleeding Amaranthus Flower Seed (Amaranthus Caudatus) Stock# YGHHPFLR651 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: Originating in the Incan Empire, Amaranth has been grown as grain for over 4,000 years. Amaranth was used in ancient religious ceremonies and worn by knights to symbolize purity and truth. HABIT: Amaranthus is a fast growing annual, 3 to 5 feet tall, and may need staking in exposed areas. Long weeping wine red trusses of flowers and seeds 18 inches long drape toward the ground. The tassels may be dried and used in autumn flower arrangements. Young Amaranth leaves may be steamed or e like spinach and eaten. CULTURE: Sow Amaranthus seeds directly outdoors in late spring in full sun after the danger of frost is past or sow seed indoors 4 to 6 weeks earlier. Press seeds into soil, covering lightly. Hart's Heritage Covent Gardens Baby's Breath Seed (Cosmos Bipinnatus) Stock# YGHHPFLR653 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: Each spray of tiny white blossoms forms a cloud, much like the breath of a babe on a chilly morning. The botanical name means "gypsum loving" indicating the plants preference for sweet soil. HABIT: Baby's Breath plants bear numerous sprays of tiny white blossoms that are almost devoid of foliage. Frequently used for cutting and combining in bouquets with other flowers. Baby's Breath grows 20 to 24 inches tall making it a nice cut flower. CULTURE: Covent Gardens Baby's Breath is an easy to grow annual which prefers full sun and well limed soil. Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring. Hart's Heritage Mixed Colors Blanket Flower Seed (Gaillardia Aristata) Stock# YGHHPFLR655 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: Blanket Flower is a native of the North American plains. The colors of this flower are said to have inspired the native American Women to weave the patterns and colors of Blanket Flower into their blankets. HABIT: Blanket Flower is one of the easiest to grow of all perennial daisies. Will produce a continuous profusion of brilliantly colored flowers from early summer until late Fall. Prefers full sun, will tolerate heat, drought and poor soil. Normally needs no winter protection. Height 2-1/2 feet. CULTURE: Sow Blanket Flower outdoors in late spring or early summer. Hart's Heritage Farewell to Spring Godetia Flower Seed (Godetia Grandiflora) Stock# YGHHPFLR657 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: Farewell-to-Spring or Godetia was named by Swiss botanist C.H. Godet (1797-1879). At about the same time Clarkia (also known as Farewell-to-Spring) was discovered and named by Captain William Clark (1770-1838) during the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. The two names have been confused ever since. HABIT: Farewell to Spring Godetia Flowers are easy to grow from seed. These annual flowers produce delicate blossoms with watercolor-like markings. One of the taller kinds, with a height of 18 to 24 inches, it may need support. Godetia prefers full sun and poor soil as too much rich compost or fertilizer will result in lush foliage and few few flowers. They thrive in cool temperatures of early spring. CULTURE: Sow Godetia seed outdoors in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked or start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Press the seeds into soil, do not cover. Hart's Heritage Mixed Colors Granny's Nightcap (Columbine) Flower Seed (Aquilegia Caerulea) Stock# YGHHPFLR659 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: Since the Middle Ages, the unusual shape of the flowers gave Aquilegia many common names. These nodding bell flowers have five (5) spurs pointing upward, inviting Nana to put on her Nightcap and slumber. This collection of two-toned hues was one of Grandma Hart's favorites. HABIT: Large, long-spurred flowers in bright clear colors appear early in summer the year after planting on 2-1/2 foot tall stems. Columbine grows well in any good, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Granny's Nightcap (Columbine) flower is a perennial which may also self-seed if pods are left in place. CULTURE: Sow Columbine seed outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost is past. Press the seeds into soil, covering lightly. Columbine seed germinates in 3 to 4 weeks. When Columbine plants are large enough to handle, thin or transplant to stand not less than 2 feet apart for best bloom. Hart's Heritage Helen Mount Heartsease Flower Seed (Viola Cornuta) Stock# YGHHPFLR661 $1.79 Shipping Weight: 1 ounce Out of Stock for the Season HISTORY: According to legend, all pansies were white until pierced by Cupid's arrow. With colors he imparted the magic of love "to ease the Hearts of separated lovers." An old English flower, but a native of Spain, it is also called Pansy or Viola. Its association with courtship has given rise to folk names such as Johnny-jump-up (and kiss-me) and love-in-idleness. HABIT: Helen Mount Heartsease flowers are easy to grow from seed. These perennials produce little tricolor faces of purple, lavender and yellow on short plants about 4 inches tall. Edible flowers are thought by some to have medicinal value. They withstand weather extremes better than pansies but mulching is helpful in area with harsh Winters. CULTURE: For flowers the first year, start seeds indoors, 8 to 10 weeks before the last spring frost 1/8 inch deep. Keep planted seeds in cold place (above freezing) for 4 weeks then bring into warm location. Plant Helen Mount Heartsease seedlings outside in late spring.
